Gaming Market Concerns Lead to Analyst Downgrade for Las Vegas Sands
Las Vegas Sands (NYSE: LVS) saw a decline in stock value following a downgrade from analysts, suggesting that much of the optimistic outlook based on Macau’s gaming market has already been factored into current share prices.
On Tuesday, the gaming stock fell by 3.99% on trading volume significantly exceeding daily averages. Morgan Stanley analyst Stephen Grambing reduced the company’s rating from “overweight” to “equal-weight,” lowering his projected price target from $54 to $51. This revised target, while indicating potential gains, implies only a 13.3% upside from the stock’s Tuesday close at $45.
Market Analysis and Stock Outlook
Grambing noted that Sands’ shares trade at approximately 11.5x-10.5x EV/EBITDA for 2025, which remains below pre-pandemic averages of around 13.5x. Despite outperforming the S&P 500 last year, Sands began 2025 facing volatility, as it has lost 11.64% over the past week and 12.38% since the start of the year.
Analysts are cautiously optimistic about the company’s fundamentals, especially considering gross gaming revenue (GGR) projections for 2024 in Macau, which suggest growth potential. However, these estimates come as GGR lags behind levels from before the pandemic.
Strategic Positioning for Future Growth
Las Vegas Sands is well-positioned to capitalize on future enhancements, with new developments expected at the Londoner and Venetian properties. Despite the investigative outlook, Grambing warns that such prospects may already be reflected in the stock’s current valuation.
“The market’s expectations for growth have largely been incorporated into share prices, and the operational headwinds could dampen those expectations,” he explained.
Concerns Over Singapore Market and Future Upgrades
In Singapore, home to the iconic Marina Bay Sands, the atmosphere is one of caution. Recent trends indicate decreasing visitation from Chinese tourists, a crucial demographic for Sands. Consequently, the operator continues to plan significant investments, including rumored expansions up to $9 billion to add another tower and comprehensive enhancements to the resort.
Conclusion
With the gambling landscape changing and multiple factors impacting stock performance, Las Vegas Sands must navigate these challenges carefully. The potential for future growth remains, but the market’s sentiment reflects concerns that investors need to heed as they consider their next moves.
