Casino Development: Transforming the Belle of Baton Rouge Riverboat into Land-Based Gaming
Farewell to the Belle of Baton Rouge! This storied riverboat, a fixture on the Mississippi River for over three decades, has officially concluded its gaming operations.
On October 17, 2024, this iconic vessel, built by the now-defunct Avondale Shipyard, was towed away to make way for a new development. The riverboat’s final day of operation was marked by its last bets placed aboard its decks.
A New Era Begins
Constructed to accommodate approximately 350 slot machines and 10 live dealer table games, the Belle of Baton Rouge operated under the management of Queen Casino & Entertainment Inc. Now, the operator is investing $141 million to create a modern, land-based casino that will replace the riverboat.
This ambitious project will result in the construction of a new 25,000-square-foot facility that will house 750 slot machines, 24 table games, and a dedicated sportsbook. The new casino will occupy the previous atrium of the Belle.
The Towing Process
The transformation of the Belle is being funded in partnership, with Queen Casino & Entertainment contributing $30 million and Gaming and Leisure Properties (GLPI) providing $111 million for the renovation, including the boat’s towing costs. Following its departure, the riverboat is headed for Terrebonne Parish for dismantling and recycling.
Optimism for the Future
General Manager of the Belle, Richard Cannon, expressed enthusiasm about the changes to come, stating, “We’re looking towards the future with great excitement. The riverboat sendoff shows that things are changing in downtown Baton Rouge.” The company also has plans to revitalize another local casino, having already invested over $100 million in the Queen Baton Rouge, which transitioned to land-based operations in August 2023.
The former Hollywood boat has seen gross gaming revenues soar since the renovation.
Hotel Overhaul and Temporary Casino Launch
The overall renovation includes plans to refurbish all 242 guestrooms in the existing hotel, closed since the pandemic. This hotel is strategically placed just two miles from the Louisiana State University Tigers Stadium, crucial for accommodating the influx of fans during home games.
To bridge the gap during construction, a temporary 10,000-square-foot casino is now operational, featuring 220 slots and three tables. Although the company hasn’t officially confirmed it, reports suggest a new name for the forthcoming casino, with “Catfish Town” being a contender.
